It’s Not a Secret

I’ve been surprised at how many people have mentioned the movie, The Secret. Even Larry King did a special on it. Then Oprah had a whole program about it last week. Frankly, I’m excited by all the buzz because the principles of The Secret are the very same principles I use in my coaching to help people set goals and reach them. You may remember my talking about the Cosmic Waitress delivering your order—that’s the basis of The Secret. When you are clear about what you want and don’t dilute it with self doubt and negative talk, you will get it.

It’s not really a secret. I heard this concept called the power of positive thinking way back when Normal Vincent Peale first coined it in 1952. (Oh no, now I’ve revealed an approximation of my age!) Before that, Napoleon Hill wrote Think and Grow Rich in 1937. (I was not around to see that one unveiled!)

So what’s the excitement about this movie? At the beginning, it’s like The Da Vinci Code with lots of mysterious overlays. Then it employs comments from a lot of people who are famous in some circles. Jack Canfield of the Chicken Soup series is the most recognizable of the bunch. The people in the movie are teachers of the Law of Attraction.

What excites me is that people who’d be embarrassed to be seen in the New Age section of a bookstore are actually getting the idea. This concept didn’t originate as New Age information but it fits right into New Age philosophy—and it’s acceptable in many circles.

Our thoughts create our feelings which direct our actions which create results.
In other words, if you don’t like the results you’re getting, you can trace the cause right back to your thoughts. It’s scary how that works. Two great examples often show up for me. I think, “No one ever hires a coach over the holidays,” and sure enough, no one hires me because they are talking to other coaches!  But more frequently I’ll think, “I want six clients this month” and within days (minutes, sometimes) I have six clients. That’s the part I like.

If you consistently have a goal you don’t reach, try working backwards through your actions, your feelings, and your thoughts. How often I’ve heard a client say, “But I can’t change my thoughts!” Oh yes you can! The trick is to be mindful of your thoughts and when you catch yourself thinking something negative, stop yourself and transform that thought into something positive. You might have to do a little work discovering or convincing yourself of the positive, but it can be done. If it’s deeply imbedded in your belief system, it may take a coach’s help. That’s what I’m here for – call me.

I enjoyed visiting your website today and thought that you might be interested to learn that a new edition of Napoleon Hill’s classic book “Think and Grow Rich” has been published. (Every principle expounded in “The Secret” can trace its roots back to “Think and Grow Rich.”)

Its title is ”Think and Grow Rich!” (subtitled) “The Original Version, Restored and Revised.” I am the editor/annotator of this new 412-page edition, which is really an “homage” to Dr. Hill. (For several years I was the editor-in-chief of “Think & Grow Rich Newsletter.”)

What I have done is this: to restore Dr. Hill’s book to its original manuscript content (it was first published in 1937, but was abridged in 1960), annotate it with more than 50 pages of endnotes (most of the persons and events he discusses are generally unknown to readers today), index it thoroughly, add an appendix with a wealth of additional information about Dr. Hill and his work, and revise the book in ways to help remove certain “impediments” to reading the book today (language that today would be considered obsolete, sexist or racist). None of these things had previously been done with TGR.

If you would like to learn a little more about this project, a quick visit to www.tgr-restored-revised.com will give you some details. To see the relevant Amazon.com page, go to:

    http://www.amazon.com/Think-Grow-Rich-Original-Restored/dp/1593302002/sr=1-1/qid=1168725123/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-2728041-8133266?ie=UTF8&s=books

The book is available on all the Amazon websites and most other online sellers, can be ordered by any bookstore, and will start appearing in bookstores very shortly.

Our edition of TGR! is superior in every way to other versions on the market. It is a trade paperback, not a pocket-size mass market paperback. It is 412 pages versus 256+ (depending on the edition). It is not an abridged edition, as are virtually every other edition on the market. It looks better, feels better, reads better than any other version. It is fast becoming the “version of choice” among Napoleon Hill devotees and other students of success and high achievement. It should be read by every salesperson and entrepreneur.

Thank you for your time and interest.

    Sincerely yours,

    Ross Cornwell, Editor

Thanks for writing, Ross. Even in the age of computers, I find it remarkable that you found this article so quickly and I love the fact that you answered with information about your own work on the revised version of Napoleon Hill’s book. It’s an abundant world!

My friend Mina Stewart send me this comment:

I’ve just finished reading “it’s no secret” and as always I felt that you wrote it just for me, and it caused me to write the following brief statement.

The church (First Church of Religious Science - Oakland) and my subsequent Practitioner license obtained after 4 years of study are based on New thought, Ancient wisdom. On the cover of the monthly Science of Mind magazine it reads “change your thinking, change your life”. The pathways to enlightment are many and diverse but they all converge in the oneness and wholeness of Light. I’m loving the journey and grateful for the many reminders when I falter.

    Thanks for this months reminder.
